तपस्या का फल
एक गाँव में एक परिवार रहता था, जिसके मुखिया का नाम जोखू था वह अपनी पत्नी सरला और बेटे रामू के साथ रहता था। जोखू का परिवार बहुत ही गरीब था। जोखू धोबी था, वह घर घर जाके सबके यहाँ से मैले कपड़े ले जाके उसे नदी के घाट पर धोता था। जोखू की पत्नी सरला घर में रामू के साथ रहती थी कभी कभी जोखू की जगह सरला घाट पर जाकर कपडे धो दिया करती थी। जोखू के घर का खर्च बड़ी मुश्किल से चलता था, दो वक्त की रोटी जुटा पाना मुश्किल हो जाता था। जिससे कभी कभी पूरे परिवार को भूखे ही सोना पड़ता था। रामू कक्षा ७ में पढता था जोखू, रामू को पढ़ाने के लिए दिन रात मेहनत करता था। उसका सोंचना था कि एक दिन भले हम भूखे सो जाएँ पर स्कूल कभी नागा (छूटना) नहीं होना चाहिए। रामू इस छोटे से परिवार की बहुत बड़ी जान था। जोखू चाहता था कि उसका बेटा रामू पढ़कर नौकरी करने लगे तो उसके परिवार की गरीबी दूर हो जाएगी। रामू भी बड़ी मेहनत से पढ़ाई करता था।

एक बार की बात है कि जून के महीने में काम करते करते गर्मी से जोखू को चक्कर आ गया और वह गिर गया पास ही खड़े साथियों ने उसे उठा कर अस्पताल पहुंचाया तो, वहां डॉक्टर ने कहा कि कई दिनों से भूखे रहने के कारण तथा तेज धूप में लगातार काम करने के कारण जोखू कमजोर हो गया है अब इसे १५ दिन आराम करने की जरुरत है, और काम पर जाने को मना किया। जोखू की खबर सरला को लगी तो वो भी रामू के साथ रोते रोते अस्पताल पहुंची, फिर वो दवाई लेकर जोखू के साथ घर चली गयी जोखू परेशान था कि रामू की पढ़ाई का क्या होगा पैसे कैसे आएंगे वगैरह वगैरह। सरला समझदार थी उसने जोखू को दिलासा दिया कि वो परेशान न हो सरला सारा काम संभाल लेगी। जोखू को सरला पे भरोसा था इसलिए वह निश्चिन्त हो गया और दवा खाके सो गया।
अब जोखू की जगह सरला काम करने लगी वह रोज कपडे लेकर घाट पर जाती और उन्हें धो कर सबके घरों में पंहुचा देती थी। काम ठीक चल रहा था रामू भी रोज स्कूल जा रहा था जोखू की हालत भी धीरे धीरे ठीक हो रही थी फिर एक दिन रामू के स्कूल की छुट्टी थी तो वह भी अपनी माँ के साथ कपडे धोने नदी पर चला गया। सरला कपड़े धो रही थी और रामू नदी में खेल रहा था तभी कहीं से नदी में एक मगरमच्छ आ गया और वह रामू को पैर से पकड़ कर नदी के अंदर ले जाने लगा, रामू जोर जोर से माँ माँ कहकर चिल्लाने लगा उसकी आवाज सुनकर सरला दौड़ी दौड़ी अपने बेटे के पास पहुंची तो मगरमच्छ के मुँह में अपने बेटे को देखकर वह बेहोश हो गयी।

वहीँ पास में ही माता पार्वती भगवान् शंकर को अपने पति रूप में पाने हेतु कई वर्षों से कठोर तपस्या में लीन थीं, उनकी तपस्या पूर्ण की ओर थी। वह अपनी तपस्या में मग्न थी कि तभी उन्हें एक बालक के चिल्लाने की आवाज सुनाई दी इतनी करुण वेदना सुनकर माता का दिल पिघल गया और उनका ध्यान भंग हो गया। माता उठकर नदी के पास पहुंची तो वह भयावह दृश्य देखकर माता भी घबरा गयीं। उन्होंने देखा कि बालक अपनी जान बचाने का प्रयास कर रहा है और मगरमच्छ उसे अपना आहार बनाने का। करुणामयी माँ को बालक पर दया आ गयी। उन्हने मगरमच्छ से निवेदन किया कि आप इस बालक को छोड़ दीजिए इसे अपना आहार मत बनाइये, तो मगर ने कहा कि मुझे वरदान प्राप्त है कि सुबह सुबह जो भी मुझे पहला आहार दिखेगा वह मेरा भोजन बनेगा। माता ने यह सुनकर मगर से पुनः कहा कि आप इसे छोड़ दीजिए इसके बदले मैं आपको अपनी वर्षों की कठिन तपस्या का पुण्य फल दूँगी जिससे आपकी भूख मिट जाएगी।
मगरमच्छ इस तपस्या के फल को पाकर सूर्य की भांति चमक उठा उसकी बुद्धि भी शुद्ध हो गयी। उसने कहा माता आप अपना फल वापस ले ले मैं बालक को यूँ ही छोड़ देता हूँ। माता ने मना कर दिया, और मगर ने रामू को छोड़ दिया, मगर से छूटने के बाद रामू डर से बेहोश हो गया था। माता बालक को अपनी गोद में लेकर दुलारने लगीं। कैलाश से भगवान् शिव यह सब कुछ देख रहे थे, वह तुरंत ही उस नदी के तट पर प्रकट हुए और माता पारवती से कहा की हे! पार्वती तुम्हारी ये उदार भावना देखकर मैं प्रसन्न हुआ हूँ। इस संसार के सभी जीवों में मेरा वास है अतः तुमने जो इतने वर्षों से मेरे लिए कठिन तपस्या की है उसका फल मुझे मगरमच्छ के द्वारा प्राप्त हो गया है। इसलिए तुम्हे अब और तपस्या करने की आवश्यकता नहीं है। मैं तुम्हारा पति बनने के लिए तैयार हूँ। इतना कहकर भगवान् शिव और माता पार्वती अंतर्धान हो गए।
माता पार्वती के वहां से जाते ही रामू और उसकी माँ होश में आ गए। यह खबर पूरे गांव में आग की तरह फ़ैल गयी और कुछ ही देर में नदी तट पर सभी लोग इकठ्ठा हो गए जोखू भी आ गया था। वह बहुत घबराया हुआ था, अपनी पत्नी और बेटे को सुरक्षित देखकर बहुत खुश हुआ। सभी ने रामू से पूछा कि क्या हुआ था तो रामू ने बताया कि पता नहीं कही से कोई एक सूंदर सी देवी आयी थी उन्होंने ही मेरी जान बचाई। गाँव वालों ने मिलकर भगवांन को धन्यवाद दिया और सभी ख़ुशी-ख़ुशी अपने-अपने घर चले गए।
कहानी का सारांश :
कहानी का सारांश यह है कि जो भी व्यक्ति दूसरों के हित के लिए मंगल कामना करता है उसे सदा ईश्वर का आशीर्वाद प्राप्त होता है, जो दूसरों के लिए अपने मन में दया और करुणा की भावना रखता है उससे ईश्वर हमेशा प्रसन्न रहते हैं।

Fruit of Penance
There was a very poor family in a village, whose head jokhu lived with his wife sarla and son ramu. Jokhu was a washer, He used to go home to home and collect the dirty clothes from everyone and washes them on river bank. Jokhu's wife sarla used to stay at home for household works and sometimes used to wash the clothes in place of her husband. It was very difficult to run the expense of house for jokhu, sometimes it became very difficult to arrange the bread for two times for jokhu. Due to which sometimes they had to sleep hungry. Ramu was studying in class 7th. Jokhu always used to work hard so that he can send ramu to school uninterruptedly. His thinking was that we can sleep hungry for a day but we can not let ramu be absent for even a single day. Jokhu's thinking was high but he was helpless with his poverty. Ramu was the life for his family, everyone used to love him very much. Jokhu always used to think that his poverty would be eradicated when his son will start doing the job. Even ramu was also a very laborious student.

Once upon a time while Jokhu was working in the month of June he got dizzy from the heat and fell down, his companions working nearby picked him up quickly & brought him to hospital where doctor said that due to hard working in hunger from many days he has become weak so, doctor advised him to take rest for 15 days & not to go on work. When Sarla got this news she too reached the hospital weeping with Ramu. After having medicines from hospital when sarla reached home with jokhu & ramu. Jokhu was being too much worried that now how he will earn money for ramu's studies. Sarla was quite a sensible lady, she advised jokhu not to worry and assured him that from now she will take the charge in place of him. Jokhu was also confident on his wife, so he became relaxed & slept after having his medicines.
Now, Sarla started working in place of jokhu. She used to go to the river bank with the dirty clothes there she used to wash the clothes and deliver them to the various houses. The work was going very well, ramu was also going to school daily without gap, jokhu was also recovering from his condition gradually. One day ramu had a school holiday so he went with his mother on the river bank. Sarla was washing clothes & Ramu was playing on the bank suddenly, a very big & terrible crocodile came from river & started pulling ramu from foot, he was trying to pull ramu in the river. Ramu started shouting very loudly Help! Help! O!mother, when sarla heard ramu's scream she ran towards the scream, and as she saw her son's condition she felt unconscious.

At the same time in some distance Goddess Parwati had been under severe penance for many years to get lord Shiva as her husband. Her penance was towards the perfection. She was so engrossed in her penance and suddenly, she heard the screaming of a child, On hearing this mother's heart melted & her attention got disturbed. Mother parwati got up and reached on river & after seeing such a horrific scene on river bank she herself got terrified. She saw that the child is trying to escape & crocodile is trying to make him his diet. The compassionate mother got pity on the child. She requested to crocodile please leave the child and don't make him your diet. The crocodile replied that, I've a boon that, whatever I see the first diet in the morning will be my food. Hearing this, goddess parwati requested again to leave the child, she said in place of this child i will give you the virtuous fruit of years of my hard penance which will end your hunger.
That terrific crocodile started shining like a Sun and his intellect got purified after getting the virtuous fruit of hard penance. Now He said O! mother please take your virtuous fruit of penance back its yours, I'll leave the child just like that. Mother refused his proposal & the crocodile went back leaving the child safely. After getting free from crocodile ramu got unconscious. Mother started caressing on her lap. Lord Shiva was watching all this from Kailash (Residence of Lord Shiva), he immediately appeared on the bank of the river and said to mother parvati that O! Parvati I'm pleased with your generous spirit. I live in all the creatures of the world so, I have received the fruit of your hard penance done for me through crocodile. Therefore you do not need to do the penance any more for me from now.
After this Lord Shiva & Mother Parwati got disappeared from there.
Ramu & his mother regained their consciousness. This news spread like a fire in the entire village and in a very short time whole village was there at the river bank. Jokhu had also come he was very terrified but after seeing his wife & child alive he felt very happy. Everyone started asking ramu how did he save his life from the mouth of crocodile? He replied that I don't know from where a beautiful goddess had come from, and saved my life. All the people thanked to God and went to their homes respectively.
Moral of the Story:
The gist of the story is that whoever wishes the good for others and help others selflessly receives the blessings of the God. God is always pleased with the person who keeps the feeling of kindness & compassion for others.
