भगवान् विष्णु जी और माता लष्मी जी
एक बार की बात है भगवान विष्णु जी अपनी शेष नाग की शय्या पर बैठे बैठे ऊब रहे थे, तभी उनके मन में पृथ्वी पर घूमने का विचार आया; भगवान् विष्णु ने सोचा कि वैसे भी कई वर्ष हो गए हैं पृथ्वी पर आये हुए, तो वह अपनी यात्रा की तैयारी में लग गए। अपने स्वामी को तैयार होता देख माता लष्मी ने पूछा कि स्वामी आज सुबह सुबह कहाँ जाने की तयारी हो रही है ? भगवान् विष्णु बोले कि हे! लष्मी मैं पृथ्वी लोक में घूमने के लिए जा रहा हूँ। तो कुछ विचार कर माँ लष्मी ने कहा कि हे! देव क्या मैं भी आप के साथ चल सकती हूँ ? भगवान् विष्णु ने कुछ क्षण सोच कर कहा कि हाँ चल सकती हो पर धरती पर पहुंच कर उत्तर दिशा की ऒर बिलकुल भी मत देखना। इसी के साथ माँ लक्ष्मी ने हाँ कहकर अपनी बात मनवा ली।
और सुबह सुबह माँ लक्ष्मी और भगवन विष्णु धरती पर पहुंच गए। सुबह का समय था सूर्य देव अभी उदय हो ही रहे थे पूरी रात बरसात ने पृथ्वी को भिगोया ही था, चारों ओर हरियाली ही हरियाली थी। उस समय सभी ओर एक शांति थी और धरती बहुत ही सुन्दर दिख रही थी पक्षी नील गगन में उड़ रहे थे ख़ुशी से चहचहा थे, झरने कल कल करके बह रहे थे सभी जीव जंतु सुबह होते ही अपनी दिनचर्या में लगे हुए थे। यह दृश्य बड़ा ही मनभावन और लुभावना था। माँ लक्ष्मी अति मंत्र मुग्ध हो कर धरती को देख रही थी और देखते ही देखते वह अपने स्वामी को दिया हुआ वचन भूल गयीं जो उन्होंने पृथ्वी पर आने से पहले अपने स्वामी को दिया था और चारों तरफ देखते हुए कब उनकी नजर उत्तर दिशा की ऒर चली गयी पता ही नहीं चला।
उत्तर दिशा में माँ लक्ष्मी को एक बहुत ही सुन्दर फूलों का बगीचा नजर आया, फूलों से लदे उस बगीचे को देखकर माँ लक्ष्मी मोहित हो गयी, उस ऒर से भीनी भीनी खुशबू आ रही थी और बहुत ही सुन्दर सुन्दर फूल खिले हुए थे जो अपनी मनमोहिनी खुशबु से पूरे वातावरण को सुगन्धित कर रहे थे, यह फूलों से भरा बगीचा धरती की सुंदरता को कई गुना बढ़ा रहा था।

माँ लक्ष्मी बिना एक पल की भी देरी किये उस बगीचे में गयीं और वहां से एक सुन्दर सा सुगन्धित पुष्प तोड़ लायीं और ख़ुशी ख़ुशी अपने स्वामी को समर्पित करने के लिए उनके पास आयीं, मगर यह क्या भगवान् विष्णु की आँखों में तो आंसू थे जिसे देखकर माँ लक्ष्मी घबरायी तभी भगवान् विष्णु ने कहा कि "जीवन में कभी भी किसी से बिना पूछे उसका कुछ भी नहीं लेना चाहिए क्योंकि सच्चाई का पता चलने पर उस व्यक्ति को अत्यधिक दुःख और कष्ट होता है।" यह कहकर भगवान् विष्णु ने माँ लक्ष्मी को वह वचन याद दिलाया जो उन्होंने पृथ्वी पर आने से पहले दिया था।
माँ लक्ष्मी को जैसे ही वचन याद आया उन्हें बड़ा दुःख हुआ उन्होंने अपनी अनजाने में की हुयी भूल के लिए भगवान विष्णु से माफ़ी मांगी तो भगवान् विष्णु ने माता को दुखी देखकर उन्हें समझाते हुए कहा कि हे लक्ष्मी भूल तो तुमसे हो गयी है और इस भूल की तुम्हे सजा भी अवश्य मिलेगी।
जिस तरह माली के सुन्दर बगीचे से तुमने बिना पूछे फूल तोडा है; यह एक प्रकार की चोरी है जोकि दंडनीय अपराध है। अतः अब तुम्हें उस माली के यहाँ तीन साल तक नौकर बन कर रहना होगा और तुम्हारे तीन साल पूरे होने के बाद ही मैं तुम्हें बैकुंठ वापस बुलाऊंगा, इतना सुनते ही माँ लक्ष्मी भावुक हो गयीं और उन्होंने स्वामी की आज्ञा का पालन करते हुए हाँ कर दी।
भगवान् विष्णु वहीँ अंतर्धान हो गए और फिर माँ लक्ष्मी एक गरीब औरत का रूप धारण करके उस बगीचे के मालिक के घर(झोपड़े में) गयीं। बगीचे के मालिक का नाम हरिया था, हरिया के साथ साथ उसकी पत्नी दो बेटे और तीन बेटियां भी उस झोपड़े में रहते थे। पूरा परिवार एक साथ मिलकर उस बगीचे में काम करते थे। हरिया अपने बेटों के साथ बाजार में जा कर फूलों को बेंचता था और उससे जो आमदनी होती थी उन पैसों से वह अपने परिवार के भरण पोषण के लिए भोजन का इंतज़ाम करता था।

माँ लक्ष्मी जब झोपड़े में गयी तो हरिया ने पूछा, बहन तुम कौन हो और इस समय तुम्हे क्या चाहिए ? तो माँ लक्ष्मी ने कहा कि मैं एक बहुत ही दुखी औरत हूँ, मेरी देखभाल करने वाला भी कोई नहीं है, मैंने कई दिनों से खाना भी नहीं खाया है, मैं तुम्हारे घर का काम कर दिया करुँगी, मुझे अपने घर में आसरा दे दो। हरिया एक अच्छे ह्रदय का व्यक्ति था इतना सुनते ही वह भावुक हो गया, उसने कहा कि बहन मैं तो बहुत ही गरीब हूँ, मेरे घर का खर्च बड़ी मुश्किल से चलता है, लेकिन अगर मेरी तीन की जगह चार बेटियां होती तब भी मुझे गुज़ारा तो करना ही था। अगर तुम बेटी बनकर जिस तरह रुखा सूखा हम खाते हैं, उस तरह तुम खुश रह सको तो बेटी, तुम अंदर आ जाओ। हरिया ने अपने झोपड़े में माँ लक्ष्मी को शरण दे दी और माता वहां तीन साल तक नौकरानी बनकर रही।
जिस दिन माता हरिया के घर आयी थी उसी दिन शाम को फूलों की बिक्री से हरिया को इतनी अच्छी आमदनी हुई कि वह घर लौटते वक्त एक गाय खरीद लाया, जिससे घर के सभी सदस्य बहुत खुश हुए। अब तो प्रतिदिन फूलों की बिक्री से इतनी अच्छी आमदनी होने लगी की हरिया ने एक बड़ा घर खरीद लिया, सभी अच्छे अच्छे कपडे पहनने लगे।

हरिया के मन में सदा ही यह बात रहती थी कि मेरी इतनी तरक्की इस महिला के आने के बाद ही शुरू हुयी है। इस बेटी के रूप में मेरी किस्मत मेरे घर आ गयी है। एक दिन तीसरे साल का आखिरी दिन था माता बगीचे में अभी भी काम कर रही थी, पर शाम को जब हरिया बाजार से घर को लौटा तो उसने अपने घर के दुआरे में बहुत से गहनों से लदी एक देवी स्वरुप औरत को देखा, ध्यान से देखकर हरिया पहचान गया अरे ये तो मेरी वही मुँह बोली बेटी है, यानी वह औरत माता लक्ष्मी हैं।
अब तक हरिया का पूरा परिवार बाहर आ गया था और सभी बड़ी हैरानी से उस देवी की ऒर देख रहे थे, हरिया रोते हुए बोला माँ हमें माफ़ कर दो हमने अनजाने में तुमसे बगीचे में काम करवाया, माँ यह कैसा अपराध हो गया माँ हमें माफ़ कर दो।
माता ने मुस्कुराते हुए हरिया से कहा हे हरिया तुम बहुत ही अच्छे और दयालु व्यक्ति हो, मेरी बुरी परिस्थिति में तुमने मेरी मदद की और सदा अपनी बेटी की तरह पाला, मैं तुमसे बहुत खुश हूँ और तुम्हे वरदान देती हूँ कि तुम्हारे घर में सदा ही खुशियां रहेंगी और तुम्हे किसी भी चीज की कमी नहीं होगी।
इतना कहकर माता अंतर्धान हो गयीं।
शिक्षा : इससे हमें यह शिक्षा मिलती है कि हमें किसी से बिना पूछे उसका कोई भी सामान नहीं लेना चाहिए और अगर हम ऐसा करते हैं तो हमें सजा मिलेगी। यह एक बुरी आदत भी है। और यदि हम अच्छे कर्म करते हैं दूसरों की जरूरत पर मदद करते हैं तो ईश्वर हमसे प्रसन्न भी रहते हैं और हमें आशीर्वाद भी देते हैं।

English Translation:
Lord Vishnu & Goddess Lakshmi
Once upon a time Lord Vishnu was getting bored sitting on his snake bed when he got an idea to roam to Earth, Lord Vishnu thought that it has been many years since he came to earth. So he started preparation for his Journey. Seeing her husband getting ready for somewhere Mother Lakshmi(Goddess) asked; where are you getting ready to go in morning dear? Lord Vishnu replied Hey! Lakshmi I'm going on Earth to roam around. After thinking a little bit Mother Lakshmi asked Oh! dear may I accompany you? Lord Vishnu thought for a few moment and said YES you can come with me but first you will have to make a promise to me that you'll not look at the North Direction after reaching on Earth. On this condition Goddess Lakshmi shook her head in agreement and said OK.
And early in the morning lord Vishnu & Goddess Lakshmi reached on the Earth. It was just a very pleasant morning, the Sun was just rising, the rain had soaked the earth whole night with its shower. There was beautiful greenery all around. In the morning there was peace all around & the earth was looking so beautiful. Beautiful birds were flying in blue sky; they were happily tweeting. Rivers were flowing peacefully. It was seriously an awesome scene.
Mother Lakshmi was looking at the Earth fascinatingly and during this unfortunately she forgot her promise given to her lord before coming on earth & she didn't realize looking around, when her eyes turned towards the North.
In the North mother Lakshmi saw a very beautiful garden of flowers; Mother got fascinated by seeing that garden full of lovely flowers. The fragrance of those flowers were spreading in the entire environment, there were so much lovely & beautiful flowers blooming. This garden full of flowers was increasing the beauty of earth many times.

Goddess Lakshmi went to the garden without delaying a moment and plucked a beautiful fragrant flower, she gladly returned back & dedicated to her Lord. But what! there is a tear in her Lord Vishnu she asked the reason eagerly & Lord Vishnu replied her "We should never take anything from anyone without asking him/her because the person when comes to know the truth he/she suffers a lot of grief & pain". Saying this lord Vishnu reminded her promise that she took before coming on earth i.e. not to look in North direction on Earth.
As soon as Goddess remember her promise she felt very bad & sad. She apologized lord Vishnu for her unintentional mistake. Lord Vishnu replied Oh! Lakshmi see; mistake has happened and you will be punished too.
The way you have plucked the flower from the garden; this a form of theft which is a punishable offence. So now you have to stay here as a servant of gardener for three years as a punishment. And only after completing your 3 years on earth as a servant I'll call you back to Baikunth(Place of Lord Vishnu & Goddess Laksmi). On hearing this mother Lakshmi became emotional & she obeyed her Lord's command by saying YES.
Lord Vishnu disappeared atonce, & Goddess Lakshmi took a look of a very poor woman and went to the house(Hut) of the gardener.The gardener's name was Hariya and he lived there along with his wife, 2 sons & 3 daughters.

The whole family used to work together in that garden. Hariya used to sell flowers with his sons in the market and with the earnings he used to arrange the food for his family. When the goddess entered in the hut, hariya saw her & asked Oh! sister who are you and what do you want this time? Goddess replied I'm a very sad woman & there is no one to care of me, even I've not eaten food since many days. I will do your house work; please give me shelter and food.
Hariya was a person of a good heart. On hearing this he became emotional and said I'm already very poor. My household expenses itself run very hard. But if I had 4 daughters instead of 3 I still had to survive. If you can live with us as my daughter; as we eat simple food; if you feel happy with that then you are welcome my daughter, please come inside. Hariya allowed goddess Lakshmi to live with them; thereafter she lived there as a maid for 3 years.
The day mother came to Hariya's house, Hariya earned such a good amount from the sale of flowers in the market. In the evening while returning home; he bought a cow which made all the family members very happy. From now onwards hariya started multiplying the income from the market. He purchased a big house, everyone started wearing new clothes, they were very happy.

Hariya always used to say that my progress has only started after the arrival of this woman. My luck has come to my house in the form of this daughter. On the last evening of third year when hariya returned home from the market, he saw a woman outside his gate; in the form of goddess; laden with many jewels. Hariya recognized that she is my daughter i.e. Mother Lakshmi.
Hariya's whole family had come out and everyone was looking at the goddess surprisingly. He started crying & said Oh! mother please forgive me; we inadvertently made you working in the garden; please forgive me.
Mother said smilingly that you are a very nice and kind person. In my bad situation you helped me you always treated me as your real daughter. I am very happy with you I bless you that your house will always be full of happiness. There will not be any scarcity.
Goddess Lakshmi disappeared from there after giving the blessings.
